This idea is brilliant! How far are you going to fill the pool underneath?

not sure yet Nicky Wayne,

as it is there is about 8000L in the FT (pool) which is fine for my current plans.

However I would like to make some breeding habitat for the fish and yabbies, so I may either put some tanks under there or raise water level so there is a shallow area say 150mm deep.

I would fill that baby up 12 inchs from the deck and fill it with the amount of fish to filtration. That would be a fish paradise and some good fishing. But I am a dreamer! When I buy a house I want to get one with a pool for this reason

I'm just imagining explaining that to my wife.

Oh look, this house has a great pool. I can use it as a fish tank! Think of the Aquaponics!

I can't imagine it going down well.

Its all the way you pitch it. Other than meat and dairy we wont have a monthly food bill, depending on the size of your family thats alot of money you could be saving 300 a more a month. Also if you didnt do a deck you could just put the grow beds on the sides of the pool and still swim in it like a mini lake.

the way mine worked out was, the pool was getting little use with the kids grown up and moved out,

the chlorinator was broken, the pump was packing up and the surface was cracking up
so it was going to cost a lot to fix which was not justified for one person to swim in maybe 6 or 7 times a year.

I had a quote of $3500 to fill the pool in, so I can rationalise that much outlay to make an AP system.

however I haven't added up the costs so far

powered by baby yabbies.

I am a bit worried about the brown stuff growing on the tank wall.

So I guess its brown algae?

diatoms?

Shall try scraping it off and do a partial water change with the rock vac.

Looks a bit like bio film to me... although it's a bit patchy.

looked like it was alive, the way it wobbled in the water flow.

Woke the yabbies up when I vac'd the tank,

racing around like it was Armageddon.

Surface algae isn't something to get rid of just to get rid of it. Wipe it off if it offends you but it isn't hurting the system.
