Are you human?: family Hominidae
Location: deep in the bush north of Perth, WA, Oz
BSF larvae would 'bioconvert' the matter quickly, but the end products would be quite different.

The composting process produces compost. Bioconversion using BSF larvae produces larvae/protein and a useful soil conditioning material, which is basically maggot frass and everything else that the larvae couldn't get their jaws around.

After a year it was all fully composted.

Would soldier [privy] flies speed this up?

The camping event was once a year so it didn't matter.

I don't think I would try to co-mingle worm or BSF composting with humanure. The easiest way to do Humanure is to build the pile and then let the the pile age. Between the high heat created when you add new buckets to the pile and then the long aging/curing of the compost you get a good safe product that deals with pathogens and nutrient re-cycling better than any other human waste disposal method out there and is very low tech and easy to implement.

If you want BSF and or Worms and their castings then it is very easy to have some separate bins for them so you can harvest the BSF larva for animal feed and castings for all sorts of great garden uses.

The use of Large wheelie bins for Festival humanure collection is something I have seen. Humanure sawdust toilet systems are SO much more pleasant to use compared to the chemical portables that most outdoor events make use of.

Oh by the way, back to the farm.

We finally got the Stalite delivered! :headbang:
And We have the perimeter fence stretched out around the property. The cook was getting all worried about the dogs getting out. We do have one of the puppies that will walk though the RF fencing when she feels it is important enough so we are closing the gate at night and now they can't get through the rest of the fence either.

We didn't use wheelie bins because they were too tall and we decided that we didn't want to trust the plastic wheels when they were full. The barrels we used were 60L and when filled with poo and saw dust were not too heavy if they had been weed in a lot.

Because it was a medieval reenactment event we couldn't use a steam engine to transport the full barrels.

Well that rules plastic out too. Come to think of it, toilet paper is not historically accurate either, unless someone had a book with them.

I would have liked to have been a fly on the wall at this event.. sounds very interesting

Whislt they use plastic, have you seen milkwood permaculture's humanure capture ideas stuart? They are some of the better designs I've seen:

http://milkwood.net/2011/11/25/wheelie- ... -humanure/

Looks like they also didn't trust the plastic wheels as they've pimped their wheels up with nice big rims

The biggest thrills I have had is being in full armour looking across the field at the opposing forces as the marshals cry "lay on" and the first volleys of arrows arch overhead.
