Skretting is not interested unless you order a fair bit. I think the minimum that is worthwhile is around 5 bags.

I am about to get about 300+ trout from Ballarat (saturday) for them I'll get some small pellets from Ballarat hatchery @ about 5-6$/kg.

Once they get bigger I have some Hay Market stuff to finish off and then I'll need some Skretting stuff to grow them out.

For that I'll need a larger feed. What would make sense is coordinating an order for March when most people will want to restock their systems with trout. In March/April the Ballarat hatchery fish will be about 10g. 10g fish would want the Nutra RC 1.2mm pellet. By May/June they would be about 30g and need the Nutra RC 2.3mm by September should be able to move onto the 3mm pellet and onto the Spectra SS 4 or 6mm pellet there after.

The problem is when they are small they don't eat much so a bag of Nutra RC 1.2mm goes along way.

A 25kg bag of Nutra RC 1.2mm will get 4167 fish from 10g to 15g @ FCR of 1.2 ( 25000/(15-10)/1.2).

If we skipped a size class and went for Nutra RC 1.8mm one bag will get 1042 fish from 10g to 30g (25000/(30-10)/1.2).

Continuing on that food you could get 416 fish from 10g to 60g.

If we had more people we could provide the food in a more refined way. That probably doesn't make much sense.

Well, it is time to bite the bullet and make an order, from SKRETTING!

I spoke to one of their staff who was more than happy to help

I intend to order the following:

Nova FF 3mm and 5mm floating - for trout
Nova ME 3mm slow sinking for natives
Nutra RC 1.2mm for fingerlings

While these come in 20/25 kg bags, I am happy to package out in smaller quantities, because I understand that the large bags can be "inconvenient" for us small guys. You may have seen my system featured on BYAP as "Iceman's Parents System"

More details to follow regarding pick up/postage and costs to break down from the bulk bags.

Aquaponics is on the move, and the more we can do to help each other, the more cost effective we can be.

If I receive enough support, I am prepared to help supply fish food on a regular basis, in quantities that match the needs of the backyard systems.

Ian

If you are happy to make the order I'm happy to prepare the order based on the results of this thread.

Was planning to do something similar when I'm set up since a friend in SA was after some too and I'm likely to be going over there every 6 months or so.. Happy to jump on board with your order instead..

Had been feeding mine Nova FF for natives and Spectra FF for the trout, so would probably go with that again..

@EEE do you have a time frame on your order?

I put 30 days on the poll with the idea that the food would be ordered for a march purchase of fish.

If we get more people it may be better to buy the smaller sizes of feed from the Ballarat hatchery and only get the larger sizes directly from Skrettings.

The order is in, as noted above. Skretting are manufacturing the Nova on Friday, so it will be fresh, despatching Monday. Hoping to have it in a week or so, depending on Toll Transport. Happy to supply those varieties until I see where demand is going.

20/02 hindsight says I should have done this a month ago, but I was running out of food, and my Silvers weren't feeding well with the FF I had.

I will put prices up over the weekend.

Ian
