Generally it's regarded to be good practice to keep a quantity of water to top up water levels. This way chlorine in tap water can break down and ph levels can be adjusted to suit the ft. As the nitrogen cycle progresses the ph will drop and adding alkaline water into an acidic ft can stress, even kill the fish.

Sounds like a plan. I'll have to pick up a few barrels soon for it.

Cheers and thanks again!

You can also protect the fish more by adding the topup water to your sump barrel or into your grow beds, allowing it some time to mix and equalize with the system water before reaching the fish.

Tiny update, plants are growing well, though I'm thinking maybe some iron is in order as the new leaves on the parsley are looking a bit deficient (and it wasn't the healthiest specimen to begin with). Looks like the one pineapple sage cutting I left in has taken as there a teeny weeny new leaf growing on it now.

No sump setup but the growbed idea isn't bad, thanks. I'll probably just have a barrel or two with water for top-ups ready to go because I'll need it for the IBC systems I'm doing next.

Are the fish flying/floating above the water?

It'd be slightly alarming if they were!

Lol, now I look at the photo again it does sort of look like they are. Hover-fish-ponics maybe? :P

I'm happy to say that my fish and plants survived the week without me, thankfully my husband did a good job with keeping an eye on it. Not much to report, although the plant growth is coming along nicely. I'm sure everything is going to be overcrowded very soon, but for now I'm enjoying watching things grow.

Not much to report really, everything is plodding along nicely, but I thought since I updated my IBC setup thread then why not this one, lol.

Growth isn't anything massive, but we have been using the herbs quite a lot. The beetroot seems to be growing quite well though.

And hey, why not a couple of really bad shots of the fish, lol. I think that's the only shot I've got of them all together though. *edit* Oh no, apparently I've posted others with them all in, lol my memory is shocking. I don't even recall ordering the UPS for my IBC system, lol. :shifty:

Not entirely sure what I'll do with the barrel once I have the IBC's up and running. Not sure if it's worth keeping or donating to a friend, given we are redoing her kitchen she might like a new herb garden to go with it!

Well after making plans to break down the barrel system and convert it into a small pond system to surprise a friend when she got out of hospital in July, it may be that it will happen sooner than I thought. Critical failure in the barrel, the grow bed fell into the tank, flipped on it's side and buried the fish.

I managed to pull it out and rescue the fish, but how they do I'm not sure. One is obviously injured, the others seem ok but I can't imagine the stress from being buried in clay balls and plants would do them good.

So as of today, the Butt Ugly Barrel System™ has been retired. Hopefully one day soon it will be resurrected as a nice relaxing ornamental pond system!
