Seems there are many types of ingrediants, flyash and cement which are alkiline quartz and river sand and the use of surfactants to create a better flow V water ratio during the manufacture(less cracking).

Bet your pH goes down when these are placed in contact with system water!

Thanks to everyone who has offered advice. We'd be ripping our hair out without your help. :D We're very happy with the system. The sound of running water is very relaxing and it's interesting watching the fish swim around.

This was the system first thing this morning.

We then started filling the fish tank, ran the pump and got the circulation happening in the grow beds. After about an hour, we released this water as it was quite dirty. It's not sand or grit, just dust and gunk attached to the gravel. Yes, we did wash it.

Filled the fish tank and added some aquatic plants from our cycled fish tank. I thought that might help. The fish like them anyway.
