Wa fisheries ask that redfin are not returned to the water as they prey on the native species like marron. Only the big ones were eaten and the rest dispatched to the vegie garden.

Caught 7 reddies tonight in the Collie river. All smaller than 10 cm. Water temp was 28 to 29 degrees. No join finding the big ones. May try Wellington dam tomorrow. . .

Yeah, so do trout, but WA Fisheries keep stocking them into the waterways Retarded double standard !

Took some Silvers to a guy recently who had some Redfin in one of his tanks and they were growing well. He recons he fed them roo meat!!
Chilli, the impact of trout eating marron is negligible compared to Redfin.

Some locals have been to Quindanning and caught redfin an they have had up to five marron in them but most of the locals won't fish for them on a matter of principal.They are a pest fish but you have to have a licence to catch them.I asked a fisheries man on talk back radio one day why this is the rule and he said a lot of people say they are only fishing for redfin but they are actually fishing for trout.As far as I know no one has ever caught a trout at Quindanning or Boddington.

They are illegal in Victoria I think... unfortunately

Mate, trout and redfin have been shoved into those waterways for many, many decades with no baseline study done before that happened. So we can't know what has changed. A balance may have been reached now, but that's as much as we can know outside of statistical estimations.

When redfin breed around here, and in the running water out of lakes is full of youngens, they get scooped out and deposited in every lake in the area. It just happens because people love catching them and really love eating them. They havent out competed the carp yet but we are hoping they will

Marron are only native to the Collie River and south down to Albany area so that makes only 4 catchments within this region that are now stocked with trout. The greenies have slowly been winning the war to have trout stocking in WA made a thing of the past and over the last few years many waters have been removed from the trout stocking list. Due to unfavorable spawning conditions within a couple of years the trout die out so in WA at least they are a controlled species. Make no mistake if trout stocking public waters in WA comes to a halt the govt hatchery will close down and there will virtually be no trout left in WA for any purpose including aquaponics.

Redfin are a different story though as once they are in a waterway you cant get rid of them, they breed like rabbits and then stunt in size. Unfortunately Redfin do taste good so misguided souls often illegally translocate them to their favorite water thinking that it will give them good fishing. Dams like Waroona and Glen Mervyn for instance were once great trout fishing dams but are now just full of runt Redfin after being illegally introduced.
Check out what they did at Waroona Dam a few years back in an attempt to eradicate Redfin when the water was drained to fix the wall.

Even the dynamite didnt knock em off and in Tassie they have even gone to the extent of using rotenone poision in some lakes and that failed too.

I have never translocated any fish including redfin but I know many who have. If I find some youngans I will try them in my 200L aquarium to see if I can get them to eat

I have been fishing red perch since the age of 12, now I actually buy them from a supplier that raise them in ponds.
The lake where I'm from "lake Como" has many of them, in fact so many that we have a special local dish "perch risotto"
As a chef point of view it's honestly the only delicacy coming out of fresh water, I also heard it has known to have higher omega 3 than any other fresh water species.
By the way this is just a note of excitement to the fact I have 100 of them coming next month! I finally got a supplier! They feed on blood worm, BLSF, live/dead bait or even trout pellets if get customised to do so!

Bloody hell thats a lot of Red Fin in the previous photo. Looks like I better turn left instead of right on the HWY next time I go for a paddle.

I've still got a few in my sump with 20 odd SP. Some that I'd thought would have been eaten as the biggest reddie is 40cm. But there pretty much useless at my place as they wont take pellets and I'm away for 6 months of the year.

Even in the UK I find this statement a bit odd. What about eels, trout and salmon both caught in fresh water both of equal or greater value than redfin (baring in mind "value" is a completely subjective consideration).

Eels are catadromous, trout/salmon are anadromous, neither is true fresh water species
