Hey guys, As an introduction; I have been in traditional gardening for years and loved it. However with the drought in California I was digging in to figure out how to save money due to a climb in water prices here. This is how I stumbled upon Aquaponics. I have been up to my eyeballs since new years digging up every bit of info I could (and there is lots!!!) to get started. I finally decided that "barrelponics" was a good system for me to start with being so new. I have built the bulk of the sytem, and now am cycling with fish in the tanks to allow the nitrifying bacteria to start. Please see my system, and any pointers would be greatly appreciated!

Looking like a good start. :thumbleft:

Just a few questions:
What type of media are you going to use?
Type of Fish?
How much light do you get in that area?
Timer on pump or siphons?

Let me know if you need something sourced... im in Hollywood.
(Oh yeah FYI, there is a great IBC guy in your neck of the woods)

Media will definitely be lava rock.
Fish is torn between channel cats or talapia.
Sun is from 8 am to about 5pm ish...
And finally i am going siphon.

The guy that I got my barrels from is in Norco and sells IBC's for $110. I had intended to strt smaller, but it got out of hand quick.... I think i will run this system for a year and then expand, as i have lots of space and really want a ton of veggies. My wife and i both can, so that will give us lots of food!
