Was Boots hoping some goldfish wouldn't survive and he would get some?

I've been pushing my bacteria colony to get ready for some new fish in a few weeks.
Today's water test showed:
pH 8.2
ammonia 0.25
nitrite undecided
nitrate 80+
The picture shows two attempts at the nitrite test.
The dark bottle seems to me to indicate an off scale high reading. So I ran another test using the standard amount of water and one drop instead of five drops of the test solution. This one appears to be less than 0.25 ppm nitrite. It should read 1/5 of my concentration right?
Maybe I can't see the colors needed to do this test.
Any ideas folks?

Gene,

I don't think that will work right. You might try 1/5 the water but add 4/5 distilled and the right number of drops from the test kit. Putting less reagent won't work right.

4 parts distilled water and I part fish water.
I still do not see any color that matches.
So more than 25 ppm nitrite.
Next testy pure distilled water?

Keep diluting buddy. Eventually you will find a dilution that is on the scale. Don't add anything to your system, just let it work itself out.
