Whats the block for Forest, is it for hiding spots for the fish? Or to stand pots on?

a bit of both, joel, but mainly as a pot stand.

You ordered one Ell, that's excellent, what did they quote you?

We put the first water in the tank yesterday afternoon and we're running the water through the system. The gravel is still clouding the water but it's much better than it was.

One of the larger fish was dead in the holding tank this morning. I did an ammonia test and it was high in the unsafe zone. We quickly put fresh water in the other tank and they're now all in fresh water. We hope to put them in the tank this afternoon.

When the gravel is washed a few more times, we'll fill the tank and pour about 50 litres of water from the cycled fish tank over the gravel. I have our gold fish in another container so I can scrape out his tank and add that too. He has some plants in his tank and I'd like to add them to the fish tank but I can't so that till I know if the besser block is safe or not. I have seedlings ready to go in. The pump is working really well and it's very quiet.

Is there anything else we should be doing?

if the gravel is still clouding the water, cover the pipe going back into the fishtank with a sock or similar. Change it as necessary. This will catch a lot of the suspended silt.

Forest - I wouldn't be worried about putting the fish in while the water is still cloudy. Perch live naturally in turbid water.

forest, the tank was quoted at $330 and 6-8 weeks, so ordered one.

This is my water filtering contraption:
1 very clean white towel draped over an old milk crate, tied on with a bit of string and placed under water flow - used a red towel on 1st go and had lovely pink (clean) water  - leave until water crystal clear (about 2 days)

I use it every time I add a new GB

thats a great lookin setup forest :D:D......

I used/stole a similar idea as Ell..... I used a bucket with holes in the bottom (with fly wire mesh over the holes)and filled it with that polyester doona filling stuff and hung it under my return line and it worked real well...

Do you have any normal house bricks Forest? I;ve used many different house bricks in my systems without troubles..

You could even make a couple of stackes of house bricks, then put a well seasoned (non treated pine) plank across between them, with another brick on each end, then you have a shelf for many plants..
