We're always on the hunt to try different ways of growing stuff with what we have. Here we have taken a seed tray with pyramid shaped holes and turned it upside down. The holes are filled with sphagnum moss from Home Depot (Our pH has run at 7.8 for over a year). I didn't keep track of number of days, but we just planted a new batch the same way on Jan 13th so I'll keep track this time. Students put 2 romaine lettuce seeds in the bottom side of each hole. The trays are set about 1" deep into a deep water culture so that about 1" of the tray is sticking out of the water.

That is different but how are they planning on removing the seedlings to space the plants or are they just going to harvest as a cut and come again type crop.

Good question - We now have 4 trays of lettuce with 55 holes in each tray. From now on we'll space the planting out a week apart so after about a month we can harvest half the tray (about 27 small heads) about every week until summer break.

At least that's our goal
