I have looked through u tube videos and have seen a few roos killed for food. I was just curious as to to what you can hunt legally. Is it part of your meat in freezer? Is it not considered viable for other reasons? I can raise chickens, pigs and cows but our farm is for more deer in the freezer than crops and unhealthy meat.

I raise chooks, ducks, geese, etc and have raised a pig but, like you, my freezer is mostly stocked with hunted food. This comprises the 'three Rs' - 'roo, rabbit and rainbow trout!

Around here lots of rabbits with a few pigs and goats. There are Red and Fallow deer as well but not very many.

Native wildlife over than ducks and fish in season are protect and can not be hunted except for the purposes of culling on farms but requires a special permit.

RairdogAP, you may have noticed by the responses you have received thus far that, other than kanagroos which are in plague proportions in many agricultural areas, our hunting is fairly well limited to introduced mammal species, plus a few bird species such as Magpie Geese. The mammals, including pigs, goats, deer, camels, donkeys, water buffalo (probably eradicated by now) and others not particularly suited to the freezer such as (feral) cats, (wild) dogs and foxes, are generally categorised as feral pests by various levels of government and so are 'fair game' for hunters, as long as the hunting is carried out within the parameters of the law.

Our major predatory species, such as the Estuarine Crocodile (the largest living reptile) and some of the larger shark species, including the Great White, are generally protected by law. Occasionally, an open season will be declared on predators such as Drop Bears and Bunyips. This typically occurs at times when there is an influx of foreign hunters to our fair shores.

I am not an expert in this area but hopefully this gives you the general idea.

Kangaroos are protected although many people do shoot them and many people shoot them for fun and leave them, such a wast and a shame.

I hunt pigs, goats and Rabbits for food and once in a while duck and quail when the numbers are up on the farm. we don't have much of a hunting culture in W.A. not like some of the eastern states, I would like to see something like what NSW has implemented to "control" ferrels, being the R licence for recreational hunting in National parks and on crown and public land but I think to many people would ruin it over here.

Kangaroo meat is a healthy low fat meat but most people I know or talk to about it think its just dog meat.

I'm with Cargs, Boars and Buffalo for hunting purposes but I love young goat to chew on. The only problem here in W.A is the distances which you travel to hunt. Where I go Goat hunting it's 1100 Km each way. By the way I always take a hand mincer with me when goat hunting, fresh goat rissoles are the best.

Looking forward to 6 weeks in the NT come September hunting Boars and Buff. Except its a lazy 4000 Km drive each way. Hopefully swing past my goat property and fill the freezer for the way up.
