Probably should be some culling but not for those reasons , we pillage the ocean of endless tonnes of pillies tommies gars prawns salmon snapper the list goes on eventually top end predators will get out of balance , the question is how do we manage them . Tracking the big ones is of course obvious we have the technology , vested interests don't want that of course imagine if you could go online and see 3 big sharks at your local fishing area and slide out and have a look for FREE that would be interesting . It would quickly show any potential hot / danger spots and again vested interests don't want that . I don't have any faith in the "experts" in the early 1980s the vested interests were telling us that there was 5 GWs left in Australian waters what a load of crap , they were seen all over the place .

the stupid knee jerk reaction to cull the sharks is almost as dumb as the Oregon State Hwy patrol blowing a whale up.

Sharks are beautiful creatures. should we cull tigers, elephants, bees and many other animals which kill far more people than sharks.

best way to stop shark attacks is for people to stop attcking them.

Stopping live exports is exactly what they should be doing, why couldn't the livestock be slaughtered here where we can control how it's done, everyone knows the buyers overseas, Malaysia, the Arab states and others couldn't give a f*#k about being humane, I fail to see why they have to suffer just to please their lust for cruelty.

They are ok to eat as long as you don't mind filling your body up with mercury which sharks have lots of.


I say get out of the water if you don't want to get bitten by one after all it is their natural habitat the we humans are invading. I have seen surfers up north surfing with large numbers of Tiger sharks and no one got taken, but I would not surf there thats for sure. If you go into the sea you are leaving your natural environment and entering another environment that is dominated by another species.

I didn't know that, HairyCamel. In fact, I still don't know it, even though you have made the statement and I have read it.

I think you should go easy with your gross generalisations.

From what I understand is that Muslims have a very specific way of slaughtering cattle, and that they would likely view western practices of slaughter as inhumane. Also someone mentioned culling cattle, we do all the time. Now sharks are an important part of the Eco system, I would venture to say the over abundance of sharks is likely due to the overprotection of marine mammals. I believe that most marine mammals need protection, but not all. There is an imbalance of pinnipeds in SoCal. Also there is a problem with people acclimating sharks with humans. People will go out and feed sharks, and swim with them. Just as you should not do that with tigers and bears, people need to just stay away from the sharks.

There is no reason why animals can not be slaughtered and butchered according t halal practices here in Australia. Indeed it is already occurring to meet the market demand from our Muslim population.

Rather animals are exported live because it allows people in those countries to buy meet to feed their families at a much cheaper price.
