What about making whiteoil with these?

http://backyardaquaponicsshop.com/shop/soap-nuts/

although its not an automatic deterrant....
Ive seen people here dont use whiteoil (because of the detergent needed?), however if it is only because of the dishwashing liquid used, how about that^ as a substitute?

Surely earthbound or some of the other workers should know if this would work or not, since they are selling it.

Bummer, is there anything that is safe for fish that will help emulsify oil and water that is known of?

What about emulsifiers used in food?

Hey, i found this:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cyclodextrin

Pre-marinated fish... Yummy!!! Be like the AP version of Kobi beef - should we massage them in beer or something?

I want to input some info here.

I made the mistake of spraying a weaker pyrethrum solution just on the tops of some tomato plants and also on a couple of low plants in the grow bed.

About a week/two later my fish are dieing at about one or two a day. I have koi and we all know how hardy they are...

They areny bloated or diseased, just dieing.

Mistake on my behalf and its quite upsetting.

The worms in the bed are most likely dieing as im getting a raise in ammonia so wouldnt be surprised if they are all dead and rotting in there..

I have salted a bit and have done about a 50% water change.....

I did some reading and found that pyrethrum can be deadly to fish anywhere from 0.05 to 1ppm so very low concentrations.

For what its worth some of the newer members may not have come across this thread, so
viewtopic.php?f=29&t=8028&hilit=beware+pest+control+man&start=0

PS I have successfully raised fish in this system since the incident. But, no more pest spraying around here.

i did a 50-60% water change yesterday.

Cant really do more as it swings the PH massively the system was at about 6.7 and tap water is 8.2 or so.

i too saw some faint oil slicks on the surface. I noticed my gb gravel is white on top. Im now assuming that was the dried pyrethrum.

What happened was the tomato roots slowed the drain. This allowed the water to raise up onto the clay level.

Im assuming that then washed all the poison off the gb and into the tank.

Im sorry for that loss of fish (i know it was a long time ago) they were decent size too!!.

i have one fish this morning looking abit lost but im hoping the water change has helped to reduce the ppm levels.

Pyrethrins are very hard on fish; I'd be very careful of using them in AP. Theoretically if it could be applied only to foliage with no change of getting in the media (like cover it with cardboard when applying) it might be OK. These chemicals and their derivatives are popular in part because of their shortish half-life, though extended release formulations are being released. They break down in UV light or soil, but if you read the labeling it's really important to not expose them to water because of their harm to fish and invertebrates. I use them (yes, even as a beekeeper) because they're very effective, but you have to be very conscientious to use them correctly.

Bright Agrotech has a video on calculating LD50 and possible application guidelines for permethrin (or maybe pyrethrum, one of this class) if you want to check it out on YouTube, they use it in their organic operation.

Tried those but they kept hopping off the beds.

On a more serious note read this

I was attempting humour Rue sounds like Roo hence hopping out the grow beds.
But the garden thread has a lot of anecdotal info about the plant and some of its more negative properties. I just thought people should read it before experimenting with the plant.
