I am new to AP and getting my system set-up (CHOP 2). I have been reading everything I can get my hands on and this is a great site. Got app for iPhone to read at work but search doesn't work. But anyway I am very interested in the Biopod or making my own but I noticed that Biopod can use pet feces. Since I have dogs and plenty of waste I thought would that not be a great way to keep things clean. I however have what may be an obvious answer to my question but I can't find anything definative. If I use a mixture of pet waste and vegtable scraps once I start producing veggies will the use of dog feces somehow transfer and possibly cause issues for the fish and veggies I eat. I would like to think it would only be a mental thing. But I am hoping the process of dog feces to larvae to fish food to human food somehow removes any possible issues; wanted to see what the experts say.

Thanks in advance;

First off, I am assuming that any undesireable bacteria that passes through the gut of the BSFL would be toast. The larvae will still have crawled through the dog feces. I suppose that if you rinsed them off before feeding to the fish the risk would be minimal. I don't think anyone could definitively say it's safe so really the choice is up to you.

I have set up a standard compost bin modified to be a bio pod. YouTube videos were the inspiration. It's starting to beat fruit (maggots). With any soldier fly colony for feed, a certain amount of pre-pupae should be released to keep the egg laying strong. I am thinking, why not have two grades of colony, one running on food scraps for feed, another on pet waste, dead rats etc as population sustainer. At the moment I use a long PVC tube in the ground for dog waste. A cap and laying canister would turn that into a BSF colony also...

Hi I'm in Melbourne

Can anyone tell me where to get BSF larvae in OZ. I found a US company that ships here but am not sure customs would be happy with that.

Any suggestions.

Mike

People are looking for a viable feed replacement/live-feed supplement that they can produce quickly, and at zero-low cost. BSFL are high in nutrients, and are such prolific breeders, that people can produce large qualities in a small space. They are such veracious eaters/composters, that they are also an attractive alt to composting worms. In some ways better, but in most places are seasonal. Thy will also consume your fish carcasses quickly, while compost worms can not do this fast enough.

My Bass will only eat live food, BSF larvae, worms grubs etc. I have the BSF in my compost bin and they came on their own.
Dunno why you want to set up a chop2 system as it is a flawed idea from a man desperate to make money. He also promotes the 10 fish per 100L of fish tank idea which is also crazy

Hi
My opinion, like I do even from just feeding veggies…worm come next in the cycle and then to the garden. With using dog faeces as food,,, I am busy with an exercise at this moment.
Late in the season but I am planning on taking/TRYING to take the fly cycle through winter.
let us see how it goes....last year I also tried???????
I will give a few days before adding the dog faeces in this bin.
I have to collect more eating larvae.....and I am trying to collect the last of the eggs...don't know but
