I harvested some seeds from a cantaloupe, soaked them for a few days in water and then dried them for a week. I then dropped them into the grow beds with reckless abandon. I had no idea what I was in for! Now I need to build something to keep these babies off the ground and support my melons.

PS When I told my 16-year-old daughter that I needed something to support my melons she said, "What about a brazier?"
I'm still laughing about that a week later. LOL

Maybe not a bra, but a nice set of nylon stockings will do the trick.

That's a great idea! Thanks Ron! I made a hammock for one melon from burlap but it was kind of a pain in the butt. I'm going to go out and get some nylons! There's a sentance I'd never thought I'd say. What is wrong with me? LOL

LOL funny story.
So plant from seed is okay in AP for melons? how deep did you plant them?
You could also use an onion/orange bag

Yes, planting from seed is great! In fact, I was not having any success with transplanting lettuce seedlings so I just sprinkled some seed onto the gravel and now I have a bunch of red and green lettuce sprouting.

As far as depth goes, I literally sprinkled the seeds on the gravel and moved the gravel around gently to allow the seeds sink in about an inch. They need to be deep enough to get wet of course so it depends on how high your water floods in your beds. My water levels go to about 1" below the surface of the gravel.
