Well I have started my build... it originally was going to be a simple garden pond by the edge of my lawn. Something to add a point of tranquility to the garden, a place of refuge where My wife and I could relax and enjoy a glas of wine whilst listining to the trickle of the water and maybe a little spot to grow some water chestnuts...Ah serenity.

The I went to the Darwin show and saw the Charles Darwin Unversity's AP setup and enrolled in a course with them.. The timing was not good as I was really busy at work and finishing a uni course but now I have some time on my hands and he construction has begun.

What was originally going to be a little pond has grown considerably...

Hopefully get ready this weekend to fill one of the two ponds to get water ageing... Grow beds will come after ponds are finished but may not be until the new year...

It is good to be started though.

It's a good start. How will you connect the GB's? What are you using for a liner in the ponds?

You've taken the first steps in a more solid fashion than most of us do... :D

GBs will be fed by a pump to a short distance away and gravity fed back. Using a PVC liner in one attached with aluminium strip screwed into masonary plugs in brickwork.

The other pond may get HDPE.

All up for review until in place ;)

The Aluminium isn't going to be submerged is it?
It can be toxic to fish in acidic water.

So the construction is continuing well. I got one pond lined with carpet and now the liner has gone in thanks to my helpers. (pic below) It went in just before a big rain dump from a nearby cyclone. Not much wind but plenty of water. I will check the nitrogen levels tonight but dare say they will be through the roof.

I'll fill the rest of it up with tap water to get it cycling. Already had to rescue two lizards. Might have to put an escape root in there for the little scaly wags.

The other photo is the materials for the cage to keep my girls out. Apparently it is not legislation here to prevent childhood drowning but I don't think i would take the risk. Madness I reckon.

File comment: Ah… the helpful pond building technicians… well at least they act like they know everything.. Good at getting the liner into the corners too!

:banghead:

I think I see your plan now Fin Farm... build a pond, let the kids play in it... lock them in with a lid...

And build an aquaponics system inside the house... :D

Here is an update to where I got in the build before christmas. (it is down tools and relax time apparently) :support:

I did not get as far as I would have liked due to some setbacks…
1) building the ponds so big that the PVC liner I bought did not fit and I had to order another online… (learnt about HDPE in the process which I think is a better looking product
2) building the pond so big I ran out of bricks…(new skill..building clockwork walls)
3) having to make the pond childproof before filling with water…
4) holing the pond liner when filling with water. (learnt a new skill…HDPE welding with a soldering iron!)
5) sourcing grow beds
6) problem solving…... problem solving….. problem solving….
7) having 30 people to lunch so pack everything up
8) having trouble finding stuff I packed up
9) approx 20 trips to bunnings!!! (sh*t I hate that place)
10) the rain…..

anyway.. I am happy with progress none the less..

pics to come
