Hi all new member here, im John and i have 4 kids that want a veggie patch but im not prepared to dig up the grass as i know in time it will become a corner of the yard covered in weeds as the kids grow older and less interested.

So i have been researching hydroponics and now aquaponics. i have seeds sprouting in a crib so due to time restraints im going to try a quick outdoor hydroponics set up with a homemade floating raft, a single (bato) bucket type system and a short length of PVC, i have lettuce, tomato, beetroot and a few chilli's to experiment with !!!

I have access to a couple of IBC's that have had soap in them which im sure will be fine once thoroughly washed, as my yard is consumed by a large swimming pool i have limited space for this garden and i am trying to steer away from fixed beds, and opting more for a similar set up to what i have previously mentioned in the way of a couple of buckets for tomatoes and then PVC pipe for chilli's and herbs etc with floating raft for greens.

Im a bit worried about possible issues with cleanliness due to 3 different types of system feeding off one tank and the associated plumbing causing problems, also wondering how yabbies would go around the south coast?

thanks all and look forward to sharing thoughts and ideas soon, John.

Hi Johnny,

We're up in the Southern Highlands and have today put in 39 yabbies in our sump. Got them from Jamberoo so I'm sure you'd be OK. Not sure about linking businesses on the forum but if you want the contact details of the guy that sells them pm me.

Cheers
