I'm currently working at a new land subdivision in the Perth northern suburbs and have stumbled across a couple of old dams RIDDLED with BIG Koi!! These dams will eventually be drained and back filled to make way for houses and I'd like to save some of the koi, question is how do I catch them? Anyone done something like this before?

Use a throw net! I relocated koi from my pond using a standard bait fishing throw net

I would if I could throw it several meters the dams are quite large and I haven't seen the koi near the edges I'm thinking will have to try with a fishing line and barbless hook

Sounds like a job for a kayak fisherman:-) is there yak access?

easy, some decent low vis line, a weighted sinker on a sliding rig or paternoster, barbless hook and a piece of luncheon meat. Caught hundreds of carp that way when I was a kid. You could also try sweetcorn or maggots with smaller hooks.
Don't forget a chair and a beer, then just sit and wait

And don't forget if you're hook-and-lining (especially a paternoster on the bottom), use a barbless hook. Or at least a circle hook. You want to SAVE the fish .

Hi Cargs -theres quite a few of us from YFW getting into AP now. Time to dust off the hobie - plenty of whiting and flatties in the river.

hey there, I have cought lots of carp in the canning river over the years, using a barbles hook isn't nesisary just use a thin gage hook with a small barb and bread dough with a little chees, circle hooks are good as there is less chance of gut hooking the fish, larg Koi fight well, great fun on light gear.

is there any chance you would let any one know the location before the pond/dam is drained, I wouldn't mind a few more fish, and saving some from certan death would be good, not to some people I know.
