SP are probbably the best bet for a beginner.

VERY forgiving & grow well.

The forum might be a bit hard to navigate with sooooo many posts now, but give it a go.

Start off in the "useful information" thread (where EVERYONE should!) and get your head around the concepts involved.

the have a quick browse through some of the long standing members threads in the informal area, many show a progression right from the ugly beginning, and have a wealth of info in them.

If you're going in head first feel free to run ideas by us

Welcome.

Now that the weather has cooled off I'm thinking about getting a few trout to throw in with my silver perch and catfish. I phoned Tooperang Trout Farm at Mount Compass - they have 4.5 inch rainbow trout for $2.50. Only open on the weekends 10-5. I might head down on Sunday morning, if anyone would like to join me you could meet at my place at Hallett Cove after 9.

1 hour ish trip have fun with those...

A few of mine jumped out within a coupla days of getting here.
some even managed to get into a pond thru a small opening
that should have been off limits (baby marron nursery).
I soon covered the pond to stop escapes.
but it was too late for the marron.

hey I think so to tm.
but then the byproduct has a value as well,so that must be included as a deduction in cost.

Dan found a supplier of trout recently. I think they were fingerlings at way less than $1. See if he sees this thread or maybe try PMing him for details

KE. I'm also interested in chucking a few trout in my pond. I have 5 silvers and some goldfish. I'm sick of waiting for the perch to get big enough to eat so why not add some trout to get going for winter. I'm not quite ready yet but would like to know how they get on together. I wouldn't feel too confident putting small fingerlings in with my perch though. The largest is about 15cms they might become dinner.

Hi KE, it would be interesting to join you on the trip, however we only have our small system going at the moment. Not enough room for the trout im afraid.

Let us know how it goes though. would be interested next season for sure.

Kevin these are about 11cms and so I think they would be safe to put with your perch?

KE That sounds easily big enough. I don't want any until about the end of April as we are going to be away a fair bit of the time until then. After that I'll probably get about ten to fifteen. Do you know much about trout? I think the pond has to be covered so they don't jump out and do they eat the same food as the perch? The guy at 'solardome' said he could supply trout too. That would be much closer. I don't know how much he charges though.

They do tend to jump out of the tanks a bit but you can easily solve that problem by covering the tank with some bird netting. Trout will eat the Perch Pellets though they dont contain as much protein (35%) so growth wont be as fast as if you use the trout pellets (45%).
