second that. My 1000 litre tank with some stablished bacteria and old water still got ammonia and nitirte levels after a few days of feeding the new fish. One suggestion would be to just put some lettuce leaves or duckweed in there for them to nibble on while it cycles

Gunna take it real easy Mon. No fish til the system cycles, then ich/salt bath for a few days just in case, then a crumb if they are lucky til things settle down. Looking at a Christmas banquet so in no real hurry fish wise. Plenty of time to force them later on, when i have a handle on it and can bang in a few extra GB's.

Got some system werkin pics to post which i will upload later!

File comment: when i have fish, i will run the spa now and then to give em a thrill and get the fish poo out thru the spa filter. Says on the filter it can chew thru 330lts/minute. Think i found my pump for the big system!

make sure you tie those siphon returns on to the tank, you don't want them falling off and draining on to the ground

looks good :)

Thanks to "organic" ammonia, ammo reading is on the way up and nitrite is starting to pink up on my chart. Don't expect any nitrate til been cycling a while and colony forms to convert nitrite.
The siphons from each GB kick in and peter out at slightly different times to each other in different cycles. This confuses me a bit, but it all seems to be working ok so i aint touching nuttin.

Scared to move them Jaymie in case i break the "siphon spell." I was planning on shortening the hoses and gathering them together around the middle of the GB's at the GB base on the other side, draining in together. Hope i don't stuff up my siphon flows, finicky buggers.

maybe if you stand on one leg, with you elbow in one ear, your tongue out at 27o and your eyes crossed, when you move them you won't break the "spell"

good luck moving them, it's all part of the fun :)

good to hear your organic ammonia is working for you.........

we've had a discussion about the merit of OHA ;) before........i think we came to the conclusion that the liquid was more urea (another form of nitrogen compund) and that there are bacteria around that will process this much the same way that the ammonia ones do.

It will be good to see the results from your system, TT, i'm not into telling people it won't work (unless it really won't ;) LOL)

Just go easy on the feed for a while, and heavy on the testing, and be prepared to do 50%water changes if you need to :)

And so the prophecies of Prophet Jaymie came to pass.

This morning i noticed a hose had fallen into the tank from where it was resting. I had also lost about a quarter of the water thru last night's cycling. Are the 2 issues related?

I have noticed that 2 GBs siphon without fail. The other 2 are generally ok but occassionally the siphon will fail to kick in and the water flows out the top of the GB. I am inclined to think this was the reason for the water loss, rather than a pressure change thing brought about by a hose falling into a tank of water, causing GB to overflow. As i am not a plumber tho, i really have nfi and would appreciate some advice.

I also wonder whether the location of the siphon inside the drain pipe has anything to do with it. The couple that have been problematical have the hose almost up against a wall of the drain pipe and perhaps there is a water inlet to the siphon issue there. Again nfi and appreciate some thoughts.

Sounds like the overflowing from the GB's to me. Without a standpipe in the GB's you should have a overflow piep hooked in somehow IMHO

ps Love the spa as a fish tank. Gold
