especially as all table salt will soon have to have iodine in it

tell me more, even the rock salt?

re: the iodine........ i'm not sure if its the iodine or the anti-caking agent that people are wary about. Sea water has trace iodine in it and the whole reason that they insist on putting iodine in it is becasue we don't eat enough fish ;)

I've read MANY pages on to salt with iodised anti-cake table salt, and i gotta tll ya, one of the most persuasive articles i read was from the "it all cool" camp...........last few kgs i've used has been run of the mill table salt with anti-caking agent but no iodine.............every thing is fine here ;)

Yes I have been told to steer clear of the anti caking agent. It is only there so it it easy for the salt to exit the little holes it doesn't stick together.

I have used plain brand table salt, which the ingredients state: sea salt. So it should be fine.

Sometime this week (while running through the house to do the next job) I heard on the news something about the lack of iodine in Western foods/lifestyles etc leading to an increase in cretinism and goitres. A tiny amount of iodine will cure these problems.
Australians used to get positive contamination in our milk, from iodised cleaners used in dairies. Now they use chlorine based products.
Homebrewers get positive contamination from the iodised sanitiser that is used :)
I'm not sure when the regulation regarding iodine is coming in, but maybe it was on the 7:30 Report ? Sorry, no time to read the whole thing now, but just saw it is a recommendation, not a regulation (sorry for misleading you all)

Our table salt is clearly labelled as Iodized or not. I can buy either at the grocery store.

Anti-caking agents are usually aluminum based.
Don't know how it would effect the fish, but aluminum has been suspect in alzheimer's.

But not proven. Another urban legend.
