Anyone else's Trout off their feed?...

Normally a handful of pellets is devoured in under 10 seconds and I need to mop the shop floor afterwards. I noticed the first feed on Saturday morning took about a minute for all the pellets to be eaten and there was very little splashing. Then Saturday arvo I fed them before I went home, after about 5 mins I had to net out about half the handful. This morning when I approached the tank about half the Trout were going nuts for a feed, when I threw the handful in they went apeshit, but the other half didn't eat, it took about 30 sec for all the pellets to be consumed.

My water temp on Saturday was 19.9°C and today it's 20.0°C flat... what are others water temps... and has anyone else's fish gone off the chew?... I was hoping on getting another 3-4 weeks out of them, the last lot I did fed up to 24.0°C... maybe these Golden Ponds fingerlings were the softer Eastern states bred models?

This is my first try at Aquaponics, so it's an immature system. My water temp is 18c in the arvo and 16c in the morning. My trout are feeding like crazy. Hopefully i can get them to a good size before harvest time. Don't like my chances, they are only low 20cm at the moment.

Might have to dump them in a dam i fish often.

My water temps as per the weekly graphs on my system thread, and they are eating less the past week or so. Mostly, at a guess, a bit over 20cm in size, but I dont think any would be 25cm yet, which is a worry considering how much food I still have left over- ie most of it!
I started feeding them the 7mm pellets yesterday, as I'd like to get some colour into them if I have to harvest in the near future, as the hot weather forecast for the next week isn't looking ideal. Average tomorrow, then 3-7C above it for the next week of high 20s and low 30sC :(

GP get their fish from the Pemberton hatchery, I doubt Fisheries WA would let you bring in Trout from the east and with their higher DO requirements the fry wont last anywhere near as long as Aussie Natives in plastic bags.

I don't know how true it was Gav, it was secondhand, but I was told GP brought Trout in from over East last year when there was a shortage.

Marc, your trout fillets are the same colour as Atlantic Salmon fillets. My trout exhibit a subtle pinkish orange colour, but nothing like that.

I was surprised as well as you don't see it until you cut into the flesh. Notice the belly is a pink colour but the main flesh where it is cut is orange. next time you pull one out have a go at filleting it to see what the colour is. I bet you are surprised 'cos I was

Your trout this season look quite chubby but are positively anorexic compared to last years fish! Whatever you have done has worked well for you.

Had em on a diet this year Marc ? :D

:laughing3: Took the advice of Troutman and Rupert and attempted to feed them based on their weight
Saved me money with food and kept the nitrates down. I think I'm getting the hang of this.
