Greetings from the Philippines! :wave1:
I just assembled my new aquaponics system just a week ago .. nothing special, used some recycled materials for the bell siphon and gravel guard.. a very cheap build actually..

Where are you in PI?

I'm located in Manila. I have lurked a lot in this forum before pushing through with the set up. We have a wonderful aquaponics group here in the Philippines that conducts lectures . http://aquaponicsphilippines.com/ is their website.

Some handy tips on your website, thanks for the link.

I've spent a bit of time in PI, mainly Cebu.

Very nice system, lakadmalaya! I've been to Manilla twice. I bet Papaya, Lychee, and other tropical trees would do amazing in the humid environment -- especially in your system with the deep grow beds. I would just keep each tree in their own 5 - 10 gallon bucket to contain their roots and allow for easy root trimming or pruning later down the road. Good luck! -maria

Watch the wire mesh. AP Water is likely to corode it quickly and then your fish will die.

arbe is right, avoid metal in aquaponics. I learned my lesson a few months ago. My fish started breathing laboriously like he was gasping for air. Turns out the chains I used to hang the bottles were rusting and leaching into the small tank I had at the time. As you can see in this post, I solved the situation without removing any metal: http://www.farmxchange.org/week-7-metal ... -bad-idea/
Hint: wrap everything in electrical tape LOL!

maria: actually I just finished reading your post in http://www.farmxchange.org/week-7-metal-is-a-bad-bad-idea/ about it.. realizing my mistake instantly.. I'll change it to something plastic and non -toxic as soon as I get home...

Yep, we've been warning people about metals in aquaponics for nearly a decade....

Pity people don't come to the forum early on in their aquaponics passion.. rather than adopting a suck it and see approach... :D

Has anyone experimented with using Iron rods or any iron objects (not chelated ones) directly in the system? Any positive/negative results? What is the science behind it?

I am also experimenting with some rusty iron rods, nails, etc. I have put them in the bio-filter. Bacteria make colonies all over them too. Is it safe if I use it for iron deficiency?

Regards, vkn

Nope... a waste of time... there's a difference between Ferric (Fe3+) & Ferrous (Fe2+) ions...

"Rust" (iron rods/nails etc)...is Ferric... and insoluble.... plants require Ferrous ions

And then there's the question of uptake in relation to pH... hence the many discussions regarding "chelated iron"...
