Retired!

Actually since retiring I've decided that I am now unemployable!

And loving it!

I am a database administrator.

I find that I am now where I set out to be ten years ago so naturally I am asking myself where I want to be in ten years. I take this question seriously because my experience is that it will mostly come true.

Self sufficiency comes to mind. I want the ability to feed, heat, transport and use electricity in a self sufficient manner that improves the environment rather than deteriorates it. That combined with maybe the same work but part time would allow me to semi-retire. That's where aquaponics comes in.

Wow, interesting lot we all are. I've been working since I was 15, restaurants, grocery stores, did auto paint and body and auto mechanics for a few years you and then after high school started college part-time. I wasn't much of a student (returned some years later and earned a Bachelors of Political Science) and decided I would look for gainful employment. Applied and was hired by the police department for which I still work and now manage the investigative division. I, like many here, want to achieve some level of self sufficiency/sustainability.

I'd like to breed some rainbows, but wouldn't even know the best way to get a good strain from which to start breeding.

rainbows as in the small native fish, or rainbow trout?

Not sure what i will specialise in....realy whatever the market demands, but have guppies and goldfish at the moment i have bred, have bn plecos maturing, and plan on breeding angelfish (had some spawns, but needed to get rid of the angels as didn't have room for any offspring) in the not to distant future (and when i have room discus, etc)

The natives Daniel. They are a beautiful fish, but the aquarium shop people advise me that they sell few of them.

i'm a full time student (doll bludger) and do disability support work on the weekend. i am currently studying aquaculture cert 3 at tafe. i have also studied horticulture at tafe. i plan to study permaculture for a year and setup my own farm in the process, while being paid by the government. 8)

i will attempt to grow/ breed native catfish/ brimm/ crayfish/ shrimp as well as medicine plants.

i am also thinking about the possibility of using it as a resort for people with disabilities to enhance their value of life, while offering respite to their full time careers. thats a long way down the track though and just a vision i have.
