It's just used to mitigate against "nitrite poisoning" that can affect the fish...

Got it. Thanks guys

Thanks everyone for your input. I've changed 20% of my water over, salted to 1ppt, and not fed for 36 hours. Latest results below.

Still high in both ammonia and nitrites. pH has dropped a little. It appears to have a slight trace of nitrates, or is that me just hoping?

These were down straight after water change and maybe I need to wait a bit.

Any advice from here?

Yep, not much ammonia tolerance at that pH... and certainly not if the water warms...

Why has the ammonia spiked?

You probably do need to water change... and don't forget to resalt a bit...

Here are today's readings. pH has come down a little to 7.8. Ammonia still sitting around 3. Nitrites at 5. Nitrates also at 5.

Haven't fed for 2 days. Will do a water change tomorrow.

I did another 20% water change today.

pH is still 7.8
Ammonia at 2.0
Nitrite at 2.0
Nitrate at 5.0

I haven't fed for 3 days now. Can they / should they go much longer?

Hi everyone. These are my current readings:

pH is steady at 7.8
Ammonia has dropped to 2.0
Nitrite is still up at 2.0
Nitrates have shot up to 40

Any suggestions about what I do next?

With such high nitrates do I need more plants / grow area?
