hi all

i disconnected the 16 meter NFT system from the fish tank because my system failed this year and all plants died ,i will try next summer .i connected small swirl filter to clean that 50 liters fish water .

the q is : when i did that i noticed that the PH was going down naturally to 7.3 ,is that possible that the nitrate was Evaporates with the water in that 16 meters tubes before the separation

BR

Why not try growing through the winter? Perhaps your plants died because it was too hot.

That really depends on the plant.

Nitrates can not evaporate. Under anaerobic (no oxygen) conditions it can be used by some bacteria instead of oxygen - the end product is nitrogen gas. Aerobic denitrification usually produces Nitrous Oxide.

Theoretically hydroton could facilitate anaerobic denitrification in the center of each clay ball. Larger sizes would be more affected. My intuition says the effect on nitrate removal would be minimal.

My intuition would be... that wont occur in an aerated flood & drain system... :D

But could occur in a stored.. non flooded... pile of hydroton...

Dears

can i understand that ( low PH ) was because i decrease adding water daily to the barrel .? not because the increase of nitrate acid .
