Hey everyone first post on here

After a few work mates talking about aquaponics over the last few months, the quality of veggies from the shops and my lack of space, I decided to give it a go.

Got my hands on a IBC, picked up some media and left over spa plumbing parts (used to be my trade) followed the guide on this site and you can see the result below.

So far its a basic setup, got a way oversized pump going out at a bunnings for $20 (13000/LpH). So from the diverter I have ran about 6 m of clear 20mm pipe up and over the roof to take some of the power out of the pump(and to warm the water a little). But i have hooked up the return pipe to a spa jet, which introduces air bubbles. So the little goldfish i picked up to get the system running get plenty of air and a spa.

The system has had plants for 2 weeks and fish for 4 days so far. I think the seedlings have doubled in size just in that time! Added some shade cloth to help protect the system from the sun and for appearances.

I plan to add a 2nd grow bed made of some blue drums for fruit trees and alike. But want to see the system establish itself and work out the kinks first.

Welcome to the forum stingstang. Looks like you have everything under control there.

Are you going to stick with the goldies for a while or what do you plan for summer?

;)

Thanks Charile!

Plan to gift off the goldies once i can get my hands on another eddible fish type. My knowlage ends there tho, not sure what types of fish are suited and where to get them from in perth. Seems silver perch are popular and are usually for sale around september but thats about all the info i have.

Any suggestions ?

Yea, silvers are a good bullet proof fish that acustom well into AP, although they are slow growing they survive through winter and do most of their growing in summer.

Barra can be grown during the summer months but need to be purchased as larger fish as the summer months arent quite long enough to grow them from fingerlings.

Trout are the easy pic for winter.

Theres also catfish, redfin perch, yabbies, marron etc
