I am 7 miles away from Smithfield.
My Tilapia has grown real good.

I do not think there is any inside NC State source of purchasing Tilapia. And you have to get permission from DNR in order to have them. They inspected my place via few phots. They said they stop by, but after checking Google earth, they said there is no need.
So, do not keep Tilapia, without that paper work.

New to the forums, thinking hard about starting an aquaponics system here next spring early summer, im trying to get a self sustaining unit 2 to 3 tanks 300+gal for the fish (talipa, bass, panfish) use the tops of the tanks for my water beds, and was thinking of a 55 gal for a collection resivour/filter, then have my pump hooked up to solor pannels to save on electricty. the property im in the process has a 20x40 barn on it which im thinking about having the fish in the loft to help regulate temps for the fish. and gravity feed down to my water beds outside. still lots of research to be done as im wanting to do this for as cheap as i can. and found a great video on youtube, well many, about raising mealworms and breeding them as a food source for your "home steads" to feed your fish and chickens with as they are high in protien. so if all goes well by early summer next year ill have a nice sized aquaponics set up going thats 100% self sustaining. does anyone know what type of permits i will have to have to do this by chance?

oh and by the way, is there any hydroponic/aquaponic stores in the goldsboro/kinston area or atleast within an hour drive that anyone knows about i would love to take a look at what they have.

I'm located in Fayetteville, and I'm starting to get things together and plan my angle of attack. I have a IBC and multiple rain barrels in the backyard. I still have to plan how I'm wanting to put my system together, so plenty of reading to be done.

Would love to see any systems that are local or not too far of a drive, say less than an hour.

Nice to meet you MokkNoir, i believe im about hour and a half from you in goldsboro, i to am new to this and have yet to even invest in my system yet, doing lots and lots of reasearch before i get into it, such as ways to run the system without added electricty or water (witch iv figured out using solor pannels and water collection, barn/house needs gutters anyways) my issues are figruing how to keep the tanks a constatnt temp year round with the nc temp fluctuating so much. i was thinking of burying a 275 gal tote "hold tank" below the frost line where the temps a constant 65 degrees year round and using a pump to get it to my tanks and just gravety feed it back thew the system to the hold tank. and hope that will do to keep my system from freezing during the winter, my second issue is i dont want to use store bought foods for my fish im planning on having chickens aswell so i was thinking of growing duckweed, breeding shrimp/creyfish, and minnows, and crickets and meal worms, this should give me a good supply of food to give to the fish/chickens, mealworms and crickets will pretty much live on any type of plant so rolled oats are cheap. anyway still planning, let me know how your doing as ill be reading every day.

for greenhouses look at deltacanopy.com i seen a post someone used them to buy their greenhouse, and i did some looking around, definatly the cheapest iv seen and comes with everything you need to build one.

An Aquaculture license is Free to get in NC. Just fill out the forms, and they mail back a 5 year license. If you plan on doing tilapia, you will need an authorization to raise them. Depending on your location to a watershed or tributary they may or may not inspect your operation. They are pretty user friendly, and a free license is good insurance regardless.

I am in wilmington, nc about 2 hours southeast of fayetteville... give me a call .. I have a 12 x33' AP greenhouse with 2000 gallons of water, a small 10 bed outdoor system with 280 gallons and a small starter system with 110 gallons of water, not to mention 15 (and growing) multi sized wicking beds

my systems are 4+ years old and have been doing this for a few years..

if so how good was it?

Currently using two of the 10x15 Foot pond skin liners in the media beds with river rock and the 7x10 foot pond skin for the DWC raft bed. Holding up great so far. Corners are easy to fold tight. Polyurethane, I think seals and adheres better, but they take silicone well too. I will definitly use them in future projects.
