They are Lilly Miller Sweet basil.

I tossed in some lettuce sample blend and some cilantro the other day and it looks like they all sprouted too. I am going to end up with a mess if they keep growing.

Nice setup. What are these drains you are using? One for drain and for overflow, but are these filter on top or just a grid?

Cheers

The drains I use were purchased at a hydroponics shop near my house. They are both used as drains, but the upper one doubles as overflow protection as well. They are pretty handy because I can add or remove segments depending on how high I want to have my water level. The tops are just a grid, they have no filter action whatsoever.

I chose to use them instead of other types of drains due to being away from home a lot and I wanted to make sure my wife was able to manage the system if something were to go wrong. Plus it is my first system.

I have been looking for whatever has been eating my lettuce for two days. Finally tonight I decided to go out with a flashlight after dark and caught the culprit. It's amazing how much caterpillars can eat...

Or Guinea Fowl. :)

Read some time ago how brilliant they are at pest control. They're insect eaters so do very little damage to plant growth.

Read here if you're interested:

Sorry I thought I would try out "bold" but it seems like I am threatening you to "read here" or else. :)

Lol. Thanks Rupe. I was surprised but you can get them in Australia too as far as I can tell.

Spent a few years on a farm when I was young, around 11-12 years old and used to hunt them. They were real wild guineas on the farm, never got one in two years of trying. Very smart and stealthy. Got pheasants and rabbits in that time but the guineas always evaded me the little buggers. :)

Martin.

They sound awesome. The thing is that San Diego might be a little too crowded for them.

Yeah, it might be a problem in a built up area. I can dream though eh? I see them around here where I mountain bike, the urban version of the ones I saw on the farm as a kid. They're much tamer but still very smart birds.
