WARNING - Just a heads up for anyone selling on Gumtree.

I posted an advert yesterday and was contacted by sms requesting a response to an email address which I did. The enquirer then requested I open an account with Paypal and forward the details to which they would then make payment. They would have a shipping company collect the goods. I felt uncomfortable about the request and rather than tell them to go jump, I just said that the item had been sold and paused the advert.
I looked a bit further and discovered it was a scam. I have advised ACMA of the sms to 0429999888 and forwarded the email to wascamnet@commerce.wa.gov.au

I had exactly that... I contacted Gumtree and they said not to put phone numbers on there. I have had a number of them wanting to pay via Paypal NOW and offering considerably less than the price. Telling them I will only send goods registered post and insured seems to make them go away.

I think what they want is to get the goods (via their fake shipper) then claim they didn't arrive/never sent etc. By arranging their own 'courier' they don't have to give a valid address. They complain, Paypal hits the seller account for the money and you're out goods and cash.

As a footnote, here is what Guntree has to say about it. I mentioned I didn't see how them wanting to pay via paypal could lead to me losing money.

Again, the whole purpose of this scam is to get you to deposit money into an account; as this is normally the type of scheme reported to us. They should move on after you've ceased correspondence.

So as long as you ignore these emails and don't deposit any of your own money into an account, you should be fine.
