I have just returned from a trip to the North and it may interest West Australian members if they wish to try some thing new that there is a good selection near Gascoyne Junction as they have had good rains in the area and there seems to be fish in most of the small water holes. One place had tilapia, another had what I think was spangled perch and another had what I think were mullet. They are all fairly small, the bigger ones are about the size of a big gambusia and some are even smaller. If you get spangled perch you will need to cover your tank otherwise they will all jump out.

I was under the impression we didn't have tilapia in Australia nor are we allowed to bring them into the country?

Tilapia are noxious fish in Australia so I doubt that you found them here. If you did, you need to contact the fisheries dept immediately as it is a bio-security breach.

Been there since 1981 Charlie and also found in Brisbane and Cairns/Townsville areas of Qld where they were first located in the 1970's.

The horse bolted in 1981,it's a bit late now as fisheries will only make the situation worse like they do with redfin.Redfin are a noxious fish and you are not allowed throw them back but you have to have a licence to catch them in the first place. If you throw a line around Collie or Quindanning you are likely to get visit from a Fisheries person fairly quickly and people won't fish there on a matter of principal and those who do say it is not uncommon to get a redfin with six small marron inside so I don't quite know who they are looking after. All that would happen if they started in the Gascoyne is that some poor sole would get fined for trying to catch one for his dinner and not having a licence. There are that many pools in that many creeks and rivers that flow into the Gascoyne you would have as much chance of eradicating them as you would getting rid of cane toads. You are allowed to have them in a aquarium in WA as long as you don't tell the pet shop owner that you want them for AP
