They were quoting around $10 per consignment.

That is possible Mattyoga but and I quote from Mr Prickles
Quote:
In order to minimise the impact on private importers, interstate exporters (suppliers) had been provided the option to enter into a special arrangement and accept inspection charges on behalf of private importers, where individual consignments were received at the same premises on the same day.

“Such an arrangement would enable Quarantine WA to treat the import as one consignment and charge accordingly, eliminating individual charges to each consignee, which the interstate exporter could include in the product price,” he said

this will require the exporter to enter into these arrangements, but they come with a pile of caveats and conditions that make buying seed and plants from the east complected to say the least. And then you have to rely on the exporter or government inspector to not stuff it up otherwise you are left with a nice bill to pay - Caveat emptor :D

As EB is finding, these arrangements may be short lived or not available at all.

It is cheaper to send permitted seed to say NZ and then send it back to WA to avoid the state fees. :bootyshake:

From Monday's West Australian

Quote:
Home gardeners across WA could be slugged more than $50 for a 15-minute inspection of seeds they order into the State under changes to WA's biosecurity laws.

The new rules allow the Department of Agriculture to charge seed importers $56 per quarter-hour for quarantine inspections.

The move has Perth gardeners up in arms, as previously only commercial growers were charged.

Horticulturalist Trevor Cochrane said the gardening community was shocked by the sudden change.

"Given there's an estimated 250,000 packets of seeds brought into WA each year, that's a cost of around $14 million," Mr Cochrane said. "Home gardeners will be charged $56 for packets of seeds costing $2.50 to $3 each."

Imported seeds are checked by Customs. Mr Cochrane said this meant gardeners were being charged for double-handling by the department.

He said the charges could also hit vulnerable members of the community heavily.

"The people who are hurt worst by this particular action are the people who can least afford it," he said. "Why should people in Perth pay this huge additional fee when no other place in Australia does it?"

Quarantine WA checks packages at mail and parcel centres, with individuals breaching restrictions facing fines of up to $5000.

The Department of Agriculture's border biosecurity director Greg Pickles said invasive species in the Eastern States posed a real threat.

"We need to keep the importance of WA biosecurity right up there - seeds are a risk," he said. "I acknowledge the concerns people have. We're really trying to minimise the costs to home gardeners."

Suppliers can enter into an arrangement with the department in which big shipments are assessed for a minimal charge of $39.50.

"Our advice to importers is to contact their supplier and see if they're on, or planning to be on, a special charging arrangement," Mr Pickles said. "If they're not, then they should be looking for and contacting suppliers who are."

Mr Cochrane said a petition against the charges had more than 1000 signatures

I guess you could ask Trevor Cochrane how to sign the petition by going to the Garden Gurus website or emailing him on info@thegardengurus.com

These numpties are going to charge us $56 per consignment to bring into WA small quantities of seed where they only check the names to make sure they are permitted and not to inspect the seed itself. :upset: What government department charges that amount of money just to check names? Sure they will tell you they inspect the seed but how many packets have you imported that they have "inspected" that were opened? For me NONE!! :?

So in reality, for seed it is $56 just to check the names! Now that has to be a first for a government department.

W.A. Quarantine charges clarified. Is this email not displaying correctly?
View it in your browser.

W.A. Quarantine Charges
You may have recently heard about a price increase for the quarantine inspection fee to anyone importing seed to Western Australia.

We would like to clarify that there is no change to the service of Eden Seeds and Select Organic to Western Australia. There has always been charges for quarantine inspection which we ask to be forwarded to us.

A recent report from the ABC quoted the Department of Agriculture's spokesman as saying: "...individuals can avoid the charge if they buy seeds from businesses which have opted to pay the fee for their clients". This is the arrangement that Eden Seeds & Select Organic has always had with W.A. Quarantine.

As there is an increase of charges we will review the situation. However we have recently forwarded out our annual catalogue and would aim to continue our service to our many friends in W.A.

We encourage you to support your local retail Eden Seeds & Select Organic seed outlets which will reduce the amount of individual imports to W.A.
You can find your nearest outlet with the Shops Locator page on our website.

Happy gardening, Alf Finch.

Seeds & books available to order on our websites:
Eden Seeds or Select Organic

Got this email today , just to add to the mix :dontknow:

LOL. Isn't it amazing the amount government can muck things up when they try to do something?

What's the intent? To prevent invasive species from being imported.
Where does it make sense to do this? At the begining at the bulk stage.

Seed companies are missig the boat (and deserve what they get i suppose if they bow to stupid legislation). The seed should be inspected prior to packaging all at one time. Seed comanies should be certified they are meeting regulations and charged one annual fee - hopefully at an immense savings.

Hmm Interesting. I'm not sure what Eden seeds are saying as the fee was only introduced last month for non-commercial imports, so they can't have always been paying the fee (or if they have then perhaps the government has been extorting more money from the unwary)

There has been an increase from $0 to $56 so does this mean that Eden seeds wont be picking up the tab until they have reviewed the situation.

I buy a heap of seeds from Eden so It would be great if they picked up the cost but it is so uncertain. That next packet of vege seed you import may end up costing you a $56 WA tax.

Just another twist of the knife in australian small business and their customers. Probably cheaper to import from over seas...
I can go to the markets and buy invasive species like arum Lilly's and lantana.. Heaven forbid having veggies growing wild in the bush.

Look the changes occur, not because it is in the interest of WA, only because of the perceived threat or perceived promotional prospects to some public servants.

That is probably a bit harsh as some try to do a good job and the right thing; it gets down to politics. What may be sensible is often brushed aside. :)
