Hi all,
from 1 July a minimum charge of $56 per consignment will apply to all quarantine inspections carried out on items imported from other states into WA for commercial purposes and non-commercial purposes  :? . This means that your packet of vege seed worth a couple of dollars that would have been inspected and let through will now cost you a minimum of $56 :upset: .
see http://www.agric.wa.gov.au/PC_95772.html?s=276679226 for more info.

If you are not happy with this impost write to Minister Baston

Ironically imports from overseas of permitted seed are still free for non commercial imports :thumbleft: .

I read about it on the seedcollection (here):

http://www.theseedcollection.com.au/epa ... ction_fees

They were quoting around $10 per consignment. Full link

I wonder how this bit works "Fines of up to $5,000 could be imposed on people who illegally import quarantine risk materials by post." What happens if someone sends you illegal seeds but you didnt request them? New form of seed hate mail :shifty:

I agree, but if you think that is bad check out the Biosecurity and Agricultural Management Act and what could happen now - It came into effect in a real way on 1 May 2013.

if this keeps up it may get harder and harder to get the plants we want to grow in WA :upset: unless someone is willing to pay exorbitant fees or someone acts as an agent/ distributor in WA for some of the seed companies.

Ever heard of the Seed Savers network? I think it might be time to get involved with them if you are in WA, or else just grow your own seeds, which is pretty easy to do! We've been using our own seeds for many vegies from our dirt garden for years, and now I'm using them to grow seedlings for the AP system.

Anyone in W.A. want to get a last order in, I suggest trying http://greenharvest.com.au

I have bought from them once or twice quite a long time ago and found them to be pretty good, though they wouldn't sell to us wholesale as a shop. Anyway, I've received 3 emails from them explaining about the new quarantine regulations.

Now in the latest email they have said that they'll allow postage for the rest of July through to WA and they will pay the inspection fees, it just means that they'll only send to WA once a week, and they will pay the one inspection fee..

Good on them, this sort of stuff should be rewarded, so if you want some seeds, get in before the end of the month, they have a good range of stuff.

Where as Eden seeds, who we have bought many thousands of seed packets from, to sell in our shop? We have heard nothing from them... :dontknow:

Where does the fees/money go? Into the pockets of the government or the agriculture industry?

Curious, I don't appear to get to the ag departments page on those links.

Without that? Someone trying to keep their job or get promotion in the PS.

All of the money goes back to the government via the Consolidated Account :?
