looks really interesting. Can you post a quick run down of your wheely bin system. I noticed the split bin, how does it work? :D

Pic no. 32 Thats just a crate from a warehouse ...

The black stuff is just sides of a cut up wheelie bin that was not useable. I originally intended to use the material for garden edging, but I needed to block out the light coming in from the sides of the white tub.

The fish are :-

Mossabique mouthbrooders (Tilapia)
Green Chromides
acei "msuli"
a.latifasciata

This is how the filtration / aeration works.

www.communisat.com/johnnie/FHT.doc :)

Fot the little white tub I use a flower-pot rather than a bucket for the aeration / filtration. (Using this system you do not really need a submersible recirculation pump - the air takes care of it - this means that you don't have power cables trailing around all over the yard... airlines are much safer.)

My tilapia wheelie bin tank ... (Mossambiques)

It is looking murky .. Very stinkly! and crowded ..the tilapia look like U boats (Fat U BOATS!) compared to the other exotic and dainty fish in there !

I managed to catch 8 of the biggest to put in a dedicated tilapia tank , .. I have at least 12 more to go! maybe more!

(I grew these buggers from one mm!)

I managed to catch a MASSIVE male! 8)

I think he might need a little hareem! 8) 8)

These fish are so fast!

Catching them without damaging the other more fragile fish .. .. hard task ...

Anyway .. more sorting to do ...

I would like to keep a breeding stock .. or stocks here and there .. for school!

(I wish I had pinks or red variety of these fish .. but apparently .. no-one in WA has these colours of mossambiques !)

Now anyone on this site messing with "electric yellows?

Get them BRIGHT lemon ... not butter colour ...

Then you got a fish to play with! 8)

Johnnie, i have had two electric yellows for maybe a year, Bright lemon yellow, I think i might have a male and female. Beautiful fish and quite placid for a cichlid.

Tell me more about them :)

I did a fish shop crawl today with a friend whose filter gave up the ghost. I saw 5cm silver perch for $8 and laughed. The electric yellows were $15 each! (and not big, either).

Aquarium (shops) are worse than the "B" I told another friend who was with us "make sure i don't buy anything" His reply was "i'm going to be busy enough controlling myself" :) So while i wnet off to buy 5 fish and a piece of drift wood, he stood salivating over an 8 foot tank, convincing himself not to buy it then and there.............leaving the friend with the least experience who needed the filter to fend for himself. (ironically he was the only one of us that actually NEEDED to buy anything !!) OH, i also bought another cannister filter. blew a total of $130.............. :(

The tilapia .. good for school .. cos they educated me ...

(and I AM going to eat them!)

But if I could manage to get my students to "farm" little fish like these!

That would be kewl!
