How do they differ please?

I have bought a pre-made auto siphon from a aquaponics shop.
Are they relatively the same thing?
Wouldn't the auto-siphon drain like a stand pipe anyway?

The auto syphon sits over the standpipe and is used to drain the GB entirely. Without the auto syphon the bed will remain full to the height of the standpipe (This is called constant flooded)
