I dont (good eyes) and the reason I didnt is because I found the 25mm uniseals didnt seal very well on these bins because the wall thickness is so thin (maybe 2mm) so I didnt want to risk the integrity of the bin any further. Ive considered draining them and using bulkhead fittings but I havnt got around to it yet. These bins are very flimsy and I wouldnt use them again. The bottoms are bowing and I have a small weep around the 25mm uniseal I used for the supply pipe.

For the moment I use a length of garden hose to syphon out the gunk into a watering can which then goes in the dirt garden. Doesnt take long so its not too bad. It would be nicer to be able to just open a tap though because the water is freezing at the moment :)

If your bottoms have rounded out, why not take advantage and stick in that bottom drain?

Dont turn that into something rude charlie. :bootyshake:

I think I will at some stage Yavy. I need to clean the filters out this weekend cause I havnt done it for over a month... woops.

Being winter, my energy has shifted more towards my homebrewing rather than the AP. As well as we are leaving at the end of the year so my system will be sold or given away so Ive tightened the purse strings on it a bit.

I suppose thats because its not worth trying to take such large items, are you going to setup a new one or just go on with something else once you have more room/ a proper farm?

Hi guys, how long do you think you could leave it between cleans? Would it be detrimental to leave the solids build and build? Just out of curiosity.

Ive left mine for about 7 weeks. There may be a stage where it may become anaerobic and toxic but Im not willing to leave it long enough to find out. Joel has mentioned that the digester they had incorporated into their DWC system was never emptied or cleaned but I think it was set up a little differently.

as far as i have seen, people seem to expel solids daily or as often as possible.
i ran mine with the crappy drain for about a month or 2, i fed the trout i had reasonaby heavily, all was well for awhile, but i started losing trout at a decent rate, ended up deciding it was the filter fouling the water.

When i emptied the sludge from the bottom it was as bad as a pond filter that had been turned off and left, or a really stagnant bucket - if you pick up the sludge from the bottom and smell it, maybe even a little worse.
