Autocad website recommends NVIDIA Quadro graphics cards. Do you guys think this is necessary?

Would a graphics card that is more suited to gaming be okay?

It is to be used for an Architecture student.

NVIDIA Quadro graphics cards are ok.

In 29 years I've never had a computer that I thought was powerful enough for Autocad

I think my current has 650W power supply and a kick-arse 24 inch monitor.

ive found a gaming graphics was ok, but for solidworks for example a quadro gfx is much faster and also allows some extra nice rendering features.

however when you start workin on things with 10000+ parts it doesnt matter what computer you have ><

you can use most video cards with autocad however you will not get the performance you should with a video card that has supported drivers. Auto desk certifies drivers and unlocks more options for the user if the driver matches something approved.

Solid works is nice but it is a totally different type of program. Solid works is typically used for parts modeling and.or cnc production of parts and pieces. Solid works is good but not what is needed for his application. Just like navis works renders 3d building better than revit it does not practically meet the needs of design.

I would recommend finding a pc that will last and work well right away. If it was a desktop i would say try it if you are not happy you can upgrade components but in a laptop get more then you need now or it will be a continuous waste of money while you wait.

Autocad for 32 bits, or 64 bits OS?

It is running fine on HP EliteBook 8540W running 64-bit OS with 4 GB RAM. 300 GB hard disk.

Processor is Intel(R) Core(TM)i7 CPU M620@ 2.67 Ghz

The requirement of system for AutoCAD 2013, window 7 with AMD Athlon 3.0 GHz dual core, memory 2 GB but 4 GB is recommended. This is for 32 bit not 64.
