Hey all you aussies,

Can someone tell me why aquaponics are so popular in Western Australia? Is it because the majority is more arid? Just curious, as every second post I read seems to originate from good old WA.

Cheers.

Mainly because it's impossible to grow anything in sand... I guess...

Might also be because Joel wrote the first book.
There is a display centre where people can see working systems.
Complete custom systems are available or diy information is freely available.
Water is precious, our soil is gutless and aquaponics works and brings a source of protein to the garden.
I could keep going.

Hot dry summers and cold wet winters and when people love gardening and growing their own food they want better ways to do it. Dirt gardens use way more water and running a hose once a week to top up an ap system is way better than gardening in dirt in 45 degree heat.
We also have water restrictions so you just cant legally turn your sprinklers on to water your veges.

Plus the more people that do it the more people hear about it. I have 2 friends from work that get stuff from byap that are not on this forum. So many people are picking it up here.

Well we consider them to be cold and wet. Not sure if those who get snow and ice would call the occasional 0C (32F) cold, nor the 850mm (33") to be all that wet.

I got into AP as the BYAP store is just around the corner. One of my friends mentioned it and as my dirt gardens (sand gardens) were not producing as well as I would like this was something I could try. Joel and Faye are probably single handly responsible for the uptake here in Perth. You can blame them.

As to every second post. Were it not for the good advice of Rupert it would be 9 out of every 10.
