sorry for the hijack Monya, but taste is a big consideration in AP and I dont want people stressing about the future taste of their meals :)
(you can split this out into another thread if you like - I'm not confident enough to do that sort of thing yet).

Sweet. Good article AM. Would be interested to hear if Murray's silver perch had a muddy flavour at all.

Another site I read on purging the other day said 2 - 3 days in 5 - 10 ppt salt with complete flushes daily was the most effective way to purge fish and give them a more commercially acceptable flavour. I guess there's a million ways to do it.

Personally I will put my barra into my spare IBC and slowly add salt for a few days - but I am not sure about the total flushing thing (water usage becomes a problem! I will simply run a carbon filled filter and an air stone to keep the water 'clean' - I guess only time will tel if it will be enough hey! :) (did EB purge his fish, anybody know? )

I don't think EB has purged.

AM the article was quoting commercial facilities and as far as I am aware, they are not too fussed about water use (not a generalisation, just a guess, ansd i'm sure AI could be wrong)

Consider taste-testing your fish regularly. Microwave a small section of fish for about a minute; then eat. If the flesh tastes muddy, don’t harvest but test again the following week.
I invision fish swimming about with taste-testing chunks missing. Poor fishies.
You going to do a pre and post purge taste comparison Mon?

Hi Folks
you may find "www.onsitefeedmill.com" interesting. some off flavours caused by additives for shelf life in commercial feeds.

GF, my plan is to eat a couple unpurged, and see how they taste, then if muddy or not really great, will set up a simple purge tank and go from there. Mind you, I ain't real fussy when it comes to fish! so I may not be the best judge LOL

I've never purged a fish before eating... But like you Stu, I aint no fish connoisseur.. I've certainly not had any noticable muddy taste..
