Hi,

My pond is a concrete pond about 15' x 8' x 4' including the filter, it was originally build for Koi. About one and half year back after most of the Koi died I started putting in Tilapia. A couples of months back after reading this forums and Affnan Aquaponics I start two system one with Square PVC gutter drain pipes and 2 Blue Barrel system using Affnan's siphon.

I had dismantle the Square PVC gutter drain pipe system due to fish poop problem. As for the Blue Barrel sytem I have serious iron deficiency problem and it is difficult to get Chelated iron here.

I just added 40 Jade Perch, 20 Jelawat, 20 Grass Carp and 10 Kelai (our local river fish)

New system setup

After 1 months

iron deficiency in the Water spinach (kang kong in cantonese)

Can anyone suggest how to solve the iron issue as the volume of water is quite a lot and iron bars into the filter does not seems to have any impact at all. I cannot get Chelated iRon here. Will it helps if I get a few bags of iron fillings from workshop and place them in the growbed.

Andy

What's your pH running at? If it's low enough you might not need chelated iron.

PH 6.6 is that OK. I had not anything else but system has been running for many years with at least 60 to 80 Tilapia and 40 small JP.

Nope, algae is on the wall and water has always been clear. I had not tested the water for a few years on the Ammonia / Nitrate and Nitrite.

Hi RupertofoZ,

I am a little lost "won't have any trace element deficiencies" but my plants most of them have iron deficiency symptoms.

Our tap water I tested is PH 7

Hi,

Great, I found a source for Chelated Iron @ RM40/= per kilo, I ordered 2 Kilo. It works out to be about USD12.50 per Kilo. Is there any calculation how much to put when I get them.

Hi Andy,

Is there an update to your system? Did the Chelated Iron fix your problems?

Regards
