I'm always replacing multimeter fuses....I guess that's a reflection on my short term memory ;)
I forget it's on current setting then try to measure voltage... "dammit! not again!" :upset:

The Flukes (and other good brands I assume) have the hrc fuses, the cheap jaycar type multimeters still say they are rated for CATIII but I'm a bit cautious about that.
They have a poly fuse in series with a standard glass fuse and claim the current limiting from the poly fuse aids in interrupting the high current.... you get what you pay for :)

I get sidetracked easily... so now I got the UPS guts ripped out, am waiting to get other parts, and voila, I found an all in one portable charger (includes solar panel, and trickle charge, connected to mains for mains charge, and outlet to 240V AC plug) for around $100.

I'm looking to see if my bro can pick it up for me soon, as he's keen on 'alternative energy' options.

I'll let you all know how it goes.

Otherwise, I still reckon a diy 12V backup power connected to a UPS which will convert to 240V AC mains power will do, but gotta tie to mains power for charging (without the solar option).

Part of me wishes I still had those commercial grade 2V batts to use.

Im sure the cash you got for them will be better used to get smaller 12v batteries with plenty of change left over for other stuff ;)

True SuperVeg, true... I have my eye on a cheap 12V Heavy Duty marine battery, but still waiting on more info on that portable solar+battery charger and AC outlet.

Hey aquanoob! Your idea is so appreciative, and I would like to use this for backup batteries. I also use UPS device for backup power at home.

As much as I'm an avid reader and part poster of this forum, I believe that the particular poster jenifer123 is just pushing their own site/links and agenda, that is not in the spirit of this forum.

If the admins on this site cannot remove this poster's posts from the thread, I would like to request this whole thread be deleted.

Thanks.

I don't know why people were saying that Aquanoob could not use the UPS with the 6*2V cells. Did I miss something? Were the 2*12V UPS batteries in series? Aquanoob did say that he had more cells which he was selling. If this was true, why not just make up a 24V bank of 12*2V cells?

His Idea was valid, using a large external battery to provide a long backup time from the UPS.
Charging such a large battery from a 1.5A charger may have stressed the UPS charging circuit. Why not just use solar panels and an MPPT charger selected to suit the UPS battery voltage? These are readily available on the internet auction and sales sites and do work well.
As he was not planning to connect the UPS to the Grid (back feeding power) it should not cause any issues for the Electrical workers.

With large batteries like the ones shown, it it good practice to install a large capacity HRC fuse, as close to the battery as is practical, to protect the wiring in the case of a short circuit. My Stand Alone Solar System has 3600Wp of solar generation, a 60A MPPT Solar charger and a 4.2 KVA inverter with a 700AH 50V battery bank (I am assembling a second bank from used batteries of the same capacity. The battery fuses are rated at 400A.

Regards,
Tony

Update - sold those 2V solar batteries in late 2012, and basically refitted the PC UPS (rated at 1500VA) with SLA 12V 7Ah x 2 batteries (that's what the UPS takes) last week.

I checked the charge on the SLA's after leaving it overnight for 24hrs on the mains, and they're reading 12.9V. I assume that it's not 14+V as the UPS electronics are trying to maximise the life of the SLAs and preventing overcharging etc, and keeping a floating charge of 12+V only.

Got my aquaponics IBC system up and running, and am now back to this backup power for the air pump that pumps at 30L/min and uses 25Watts of power.

I'm going to test it out on the weekend and see how long UPS will last :P
