Ok so my test was correct by basically adding 5 more gals or doing a 50% water change the ammonia went from 4 to 2 so that makes me go more of a wth with my AP deal... I mean even right away adding the water I should have seen a change. Even if there was something dead adding ammonia it would not show up right away in a test

Your test kit must have sat in a warehouse for a while because mine is brand new also and expires in 2017...

Also how long do you wait after the water change to test the system? Maybe the water isn't having enough time to mix properly.

Ok so I got to share this so my ammonia in the AP set up is coming down nitrites are still maxed out on the test and nitrates are getting up there. What is crazy is "Nemo" my one little fish that survived the water changed that killed all my other fish. He is living in the FT with those levels and seems to be doing fine. I am going to salt the system though just to be safe but holy cow he's a fighter. To bad once I put the rest of the fish in I will have no clue which one he is and will one day eat him.

The only names you should be giving your fish should be things like Taco, or And Chips, or whatever your favorite fish dish happened to be.

Ron I honestly just snorted when I read that. He is not named we just refer to him because of the similarities unfortunately no lucky fin then I would know who he was.

Is it wise to salt if you only have one fish to loose? I thought salting was to help fish deal with high nitrites but was otherwise detrimental to the system - especially plants. Seems to me that once you introduce the salt it's going to be there for a long time since it won't evaporate, and I doubt the plants will take much of it up.

My system has been around 3ppt for years. Plants like strawberries dont like it but everything else has been fine. Possibly peas dont like it because Ive struggled to grow them. Not sure.

You do not want iodine in your salt. A giant bag of Morton's solar salt is like five bucks at ace or the despot.

Yeah I thought it a bit weird it's actually for saltwater tank I had to exchange something at the local aquarium figure I get some salt from them and said that the salt is pure salt but it might contain a bit of iodine. The guy there said it wouldn't effect the fish but I figured it might harm the bac

If it is the amount that naturally occurs in sea water, you should have no issues. The funny thing is the ammount that is in solar salt is exactly how much occurs in sea water, because that is all it is, evaporated sea water.

I have a big box of this for my freshwater tank in my bedroom. It is made for freshwater and I will use some in my system later on as the fish develop but I add half a teaspoon to my fresh water room tank about 3 times a year. The only way the salt leaves the system is through water changes.
