Well its the way I like to do it. Actually its a large pair of pliars and a couple of whacks renders them immobile then I stick the fieting knife through the brain to be sure

Sorry about the pic, I must have touched the lens with a greasy fishy finger :)
Harvested these from the ibc system today to clean it out ready for some trout on the weekend.

Large one was 750g

Great thread mantis, i am still planning my system and this one has given me great ideas of how it should be done. Why did you start the system up without fish. Is it safer this way, does it make it quicker? I have got a small barrel jobby going but i put goldfish in straight away along with some plants. Would i be better off doing it your way, artificially ? Did you cull the perch because of the cold water temps or just eager to get the trout going? Cheers fella.

Yep culled the silvers to make way for trout which are in there now. I cycled this system without fish just because I thought it would cycle better at the time with Charlie carp and make the system more robust for the trout.

Trout still nervous in this tank and not eating well, so decided that the lid will stay open so they get used to it. The only time they have fed from the surface is when I opened the lid in the morning and fed them later in the day. This is a workaround

So mantis, would you recommend that I make a transparent lid for my system? (corrigated laserlite)
Or no lid at all? (net or wire)

Are the pellets that sink too expensive to convert to? I've been reading this whole thread if these are different fish than the ones you said came from a place that fed them sinking pellets, please disregard my question. Thanks for posting, this thread taught me a lot.

Usually the trout are fine with the lid down and as soon as you open it they come looking for food, so dunno what happened with this lot.
You will need a lid of some sort to block out the sunlight to stop algae growth and I think you will find that the trout are fine with it. Mine are just crazy

Hi Charlie. I got 30 trout and 20 are in this system and 10 are in the big tank with the silvers, catfish and bass so yep mixed in there :)
The trout in the big tank jump clear out of the water chasing pellets
