History is usually written by the victors, so history as we know it is rarely the full story or anywhere even close to it.

Personally I am not a great fan of the whole Anzac thing, but I understand it means a lot to others, and I respect that..

Indeed.

I respect even more those who went and fought against their will under conscription.

Conscription is by definition slavery.

Lest we forget (the horrors of war) - If only it made even the slightest difference

I used to be, but not so much anymore. Everyone keeps saying "Lest we Forget" but we still go overseas every chance we get to kill innocent people.

We might even nearly agree on something EB ;)

Bodgy, it is clear that your historical knowledge is very narrow and short reaching, if not heavily colored by the endless brainwashing governments practice.

If Oz was attacked by Japanese, what the heck were they doing in Burma then? Or was that concerned to be Australia, too?

Respect is what you have to earn, it is NOT an automatic human right or so.

And about having it wrong again: one could end up in jail by showing disrespect for the King. But I don't think there is a death penalty on it. Better to get your facts right.

I see your emotions are getting in the way and blurring your judgement and ability to read what is written. So have a beer and cool down a bit.

Truly respected people (by almost all of humanity) are the Buddha, Mahatma Gandhi, and Nelson Mandela. I'm pretty sure they didn't deserve that respect for their single minded ideas or warfare. You will earn my respect if you we're able to achieve only a small part of what these people achieved.

One last remark for Dom

"...75,000 native laborers died building a railroad between Bangkok and Rangoon."
Yeah, you'd be HEAPS better off had the Allies lost.

So one has to listen to the history readings of all parties to get a more complete picture. And that will give us a new perspective on things.

When 18 years old, I was called for military service for 18 months in my country (Holland). Refusing would be same time in a military jail. Or one could make them to refuse you for service. Since I didn't want to fake physical disability or mental illness I just spoke out my principals and convictions.

Yes, if not given a choice, I have to join your killing machine"
No, I will not do exercises to learn how to become a professional killer"
Yes, I will take full advantage of all benefits you have to offer"
Yes, I'm willing to do service overseas, because of the double wages"
I will run like the roadrunner when he'll breaks loose, I personally have no business with war"

Couple of more things and events happened. I was released before lunch and did not have to do service for a government I do not endorse.

Point is; if you don't want it, nobody can force you.

Which "reliable source" did you checked for that assumption?

How many native Indians died in the Americas because of Anglo-Saxon activities? How many people died under the British Empire suppression in India, Asia, Australia, Africa, etc.? Who attacked Iraq? Who initiated Lybia attack? Who is supporting Al Queada in Syria? Who is constantly harassing North Korea, Iran and many other countries in the world that simply don't want that way of life?

Thank you for your personal history Dom.
On a thread about others' personal histories. Much more painful and tragic than your own.
But hey, its all about you isn't it?

You do know what happened to Holland in WWII yeah? Tried to be neutral, was overrun by the Germans and was later liberated by the rest of the world? How did that go for y'all?

I am not debating the rights or the wrongs of warfare. Those things are obvious to all right minded people.
I was attempting to demonstrate my thanks to the fallen and those who served.
A treatise on the morality of war would perhaps be better suited to its own thread. Not mine.
I reiterate, go away boy... :upset:

Not that i want this to degenerate into a blame game or finger pointing. It was all out war.
Start your own anti-war thread if you are so butthurt by my thanking servicemen and women. I didn't thank a govt or country here. Just people. Don't you get it???
No... sadly you do not...

As for this, I never made a single statement upholding war.
Not one demonstrating any support for these things which you mention.
Start YOUR OWN DAMN THREAD for your personal political leanings.
I may even share them with you, but you wouldn't know that since I have not made obvious comment one way or the other.
But assume away. Get stroppy. Keep coming back with your offtopic and irritating remarks.

sigh...

So, I guess Bodgy, that if we would have this discussion in your local bar it would turn out into a fight? Your opinion is the only viable one, what others say is bs or political soap boxing? Balls tends to bounce back, my friend. If you say something, expect a reply.

You're not my enemy, man. No need for armistice or peace treaties.

To be honest we would probably get along Dom. Believe it or not.
I was being a bit over defensive about ANZAC day, and I'm unapologetic about that.
I shouldn't have directed that at you but I swear I did hold back some.
I do get what you were saying, full on, but didn't want to go there today is all.
Remembering the fallen, not the politicians or warmongers.

I call a truce either way. Won't hold any grudge and hope you can do the same.

Aww, I just saw your last comment, cheers man. :D

Going to concentrate on a real issue, now. Have to work out wether we going to build one big geodesic dome or 5 smaller ones in a cluster. Lot's of sketchup work to start with.
