thanks guys, lots of good comments:) to be fair i think i was a bit nieve thinking the little 8watt pump would cut it if im honest. the sump is about 500cm at its base above the top of the growbed but the pipe from the pump has to run up about a meter to e sump and only has a diameter about the size of a hosepipe. im thinking if i go for a 1200lph pump. accounting for the volume of the media this should be ok. then have another pump running the other growbed once its installed (redundancy being a good suggestion). power consumtion isnt really an issue as i have a solar deep cycle battery backup setup that will run half my hpouse in case of a power failure. im wondering about maybe getting a dirty water pump as a lot of the pumps ive seen seem to have filters?
