Hi, apart from my introduction, this is my first post here.

I'd like to clarify my thoughts on edible fish species suitable for south east Qld which growout in a reasonable time. Any thoughts are appreciated.

From what I know Tilapia would be ideal if they were legal to possess. Since they are able to breed in captivity with high growth rates and being tasty. But they are a definite no-no for us.

Recommended species include -
- Jade perch
- Golden Perch
- Silver perch

Possible species include -
- Murray cod
- Barra (growout in the warmer months)
- Trout (over winter if one managed to find a supplier in Qld)
- Spangled perch (if I can accept fairly small fish)

Pretty sure I'm on the right path here but thought I'd check none the less.
Any other suggestions or corrections?
Thanks all.

I could be wrong but I don't think you are allowed trout in Queensland. Might be too warm anyway as we have heard you have perfect weather, fine one day and beautiful the next.

Golden Perch just don't perform in tanks...

There are no trout suppliers in QLD

Thanks for the replies
So I can cut yellowbelly and trout from my short list... Good to know.
Hey Charlie, any idea on growth rates on tandans? I'm more than happy to grow cats.
Sleepy cod are definitely tempting but the growth rates put me off (unless my system eventually gets big enough to hold a few generations :D )

To be honest, my planned first system will be modest with goldfish or similar. I'm just pondering the future, as you do.
Really bums me out that there is no available species that will breed in tanks and growout well/live with local temps. I'm guessing a heated system will be the best solution, costs aside.

Has anyone toyed with spangled perch?
Oh, search function...
Must use search function! lol
Forgive me people, I'm learning!
