Hey Guys

Just wondering if now is a good time to stock with trout, i am in Melbourne.

Also, is there anything whcih needs to be done to the tank to prep it for the fish if it has been 4months without fihs in it?

Cheers

When your systems water temp is 22 degrees or below consistently it will be a good time to add trout.

I would be checking temps at midday or in the afternoon.

I should also say 22 degrees is the absolute max I would be comfortable putting trout in.

If your tank is up near these temps and you have trout make sure you don't feed much and have plenty of air.

OK checked temps, they are way down at around 14 degs so perfect, looking at stocking this weekend, might go for yearlings and see how i go...

One questiosn through, with stocking the tank which has been sitting without fish for 5mths or so, would i expect an amonia spike when stocking it again, even though the tank has been cycling through with plants etc?

Id imagine there would be a spike of some kind, the extent is too difficult to say. Depends how active the bacteria colony is... and how strong it may be.

Macclesfield Trout farm, yearlings which are about 5" are $2ea so i thought pretty good price, they dont have any fingerlings.

If you are after fingerlings try Buxton trout farm they would almost definately have some, although i havent called them to check.

EDIT: just saw you were in Melton which is on the other side of the city from both Macclesfield and Buxton, but i guess if you dont mind a drive...

i got 50 last weekend for a very good price. they should have 6" for about 1.60 +gst but the others are closer to you. Macclesfield also have Brook trout and i was very very tempted to get a small number of them to see how they went but if got the rainbows instead.
