Lovely no need to get out in that stuff I hope. I like your set up with the PVC pipe. Are you constantly pumping thru it then?

Well hey, it looks like being blocked inside by the tremendous snows have given you some time to work on what's important! :)

I can still see the car, though. You must not be in the worst-hit part of New York. Do you get some of the lake-effect snow?

I vote for Toms, too. the stems are fuzzy.

Oh, near Albany. No, no lake-effect snow for you. My uncle lives in Rochester--they get good lake-effect snow. Although I think it was more around Oswego that got hit really bad this year.

Hey Janet... for us Aussies... what is "lake-effect" snow and how does it differ from other snow?

rb, that's exactly right. Prevailing winds pick up moisture from the unfrozen lakes, and then dump it when they hit land. Once the lakes freeze, it's not a problem. But with the warm winter, some areas have been hit badly.

so i have 24 sites i think that if i get enough lettuce planted in them i will have enough to get some salad everyday, cuse by the time i get to the end the first ones will be ready to eat agian, dose this sound right? i am giving figureing that the lettuce will have 3 weeks and 3 days to mature before i harvest it, how long dose lettuce take to get big enough to eat?

I'm about 10 miles from Lake Michigan, which never freezes (one of the largest fresh-water reserves in the world). Luckily we don't get too much lake-effect on our side of it; but I feel for the eastern side. They get doused in the stuff.

rblaster, lettuce is best to eat right before it goes to seed. That's the point at which it has the most nutrients and flavor, which it's storing for seed production. However, it's quite edible at any time, and plenty of people prefer baby lettuces for the delicacy.

RB, I was able to grow mesclun mix within a couple of weeks in the AP system last Summer; you should get faster results than a dirt garden.
