Here is the finished system (without white pebbles on the other growbed)
Image

Can I do something here for filtering
Top pipe is 90mm overflow to growbeds
bottom is 40mm pump to fishtank

'The dam'

I've put my wicking barrels close to the system incase I find aquaponics actually works ;P and I want to expand.

How deep do you plant the seedling roots?

I'm thinking about flushing the water (because its still light brown river silt) onto the garden and re filling it with tank water - will this effect the cycling? or should I wait? until i get a test kit this week?>

Seasol will def give a seaweed stink. It passes overnight.

I bury mine a bit deeper than what I would in the dirt garden so they have good support.

The silt will clear out and it would still be better to wait for the test kit as not to disrupt your cycling efforts.

I use two six mm holes but do not know any way to make them quiter. Once the water has stopped overflowing through the top of the pipe I do not think it makes much noise

I put a bit of agi pipe coming off the bottom of the growbed - it made a significant difference - had to get the right angle and length.

thanks for that, it has decreased. I'm thinking that the lingering smell is like a fresh pond or smell of the sea>? I like it.

The reason I asked this is that my water level might be a bit low? Some plants were wilting in the heat, possibly just that fact (heat) or that my cycle is too long (15/45) for new plants, but then again its only some of the plants that are worse, possible less root structure or buried slightly shallower.

Pump, shelgrit, bug stickers, api master kit arrived today
Wife seems to think the nitrate level is more closer to 10ppm with the tube on a white background
did a high ph test - came up 7.4

Initial test day 11
7.6 - PH
0.5 - amonia
0.0 - nitrite
5.0-10.0 - nitrate

What does this mean?

It has started :)
First you see the ammonia rise and if you don't add any more CC it will fall back to zero and then the nitrites will rise and fall and the nitrates will go up if your plants aren't using them all.
Add more CC and get the ammonia to 1ppm and you will be cycled when ammonia of 1ppm drops to zero in 24hrs
Then a trip to Ballarat would be in order

When it gets down to zero add enough to get the ammonia back to 1
