Personally I suggested other people to the college, I know that I'm not the best person to help them. Yes I could go and offer what advice I can, and I'm sure they would gain some useful information and would probably feel great about it. Plus I would get some more good AP street cred. Yeah, flying all over the world, in great demand.. But there are people that can help them better than I can and it's not about me..
A qualified horticulturalist with a decades experience (I'm only guessing there) in aquaponics... and you don't think you're qualified enough for what they want... selling yourself short don't you think?... What level of qualification and experience do you think they require?... I'm sure they wouldn't be asking if they didn't think your were the person for the task.

...and Vanuatu... duuude!

Its still a Uni, i would have the same reservations as EB i think, as a drycleaner, if the chemistry department of a uni called me and said "teach us how your chemicals work" i would be like "ahhhhhh, ummmm, your a uni, you should already (probably do) know more than me".... I would then think "there are others who care more about the industry, they would know more".

Yep maybe.... But I'd rather under sell myself than over sell.. I think they need people who have experience in larger scale growing and I'm not going to pretend that area is my forte..

Yeah I know, Vanuatu..... Have a mate heading over there in a couple of weeks on a fishing holiday.

But that's the beauty of it - its simplistic. As a famous AP world leading guru once told me (Joel :p ), keep it simple! 99% of people don't want to know the organism or microb names, that just want to know amm turns into plant food (Nitrates) cos of the good bugs in the water

THAT - will do for 99% or people ;)

Not really the best analogy Yavi... that'd be like a Uni asking an aircraft refueler how JetA1 is made... or asking a farmer how the fertilser he uses is made... but what if a college came to you and asked you to teach people how to dryclean... surely if you had a decade of experience and were good at it you'd consider it.

Also, it was an agricutural college that asked, not a Uni... I would imagine an agricultural college would be more interested in the nuts and bolts of AP, designing and setting up systems, basic parameters and general rules-of-thumb that need to be followed, along with basic fish disease prevention and control methods that should be followed, maybe even crop selection and diagnosis/control of nutrient deficiencies... they probably wouldn't want to know the most in depth details of marine biology and/or plant biology/morphology etc.

Yep... if you had a decade of dry cleaning experience... you'd probably have some basis of knowledge... or at least any college that approached you would probably assume you had...

They probably wouldn't approach Auntie Elsie down the road somewhere in Brisbane... on the basis that she made an ironing press in her back shed a few years ago.... and uses a "naturally balanced" starch... to get her families shirts super white and crispy.... :D

Seems that's the kind of model being used to promote commercial aquaponics though.... people with no commercial growing experience at all... no commercial facility.... or one that's just been built based on Auntie Elsie's backyard plans... and only stocked with starch a week before...

P.S... just heard from Auntie Elsie... she's on her way back from a Mongolian training workshop... where she was invited to demonstrate how to remove the knots from yak coats...

Apparantly the trip wasn't overly successful... as there wasn't anything to build an ironing press out of available.... she did at least take her magic starch... but couldn't find one of those squeezy noozle spray thingies...

I know, I know... I'm so going to hell... :D

Sorry Yabbies... but I just don't think the future of the dry cleaning industry is dependant on, or needs... all the Auntie Elsie's.. that are the subject of this tread discussion... :D
